Dynamic Controls on Sediment Accumulation Rates on the Northern Californian Shelf

چکیده
The objectives of this project are to (1) complete C geochronological studies of piston cores collected previously on the Eel River and adjoining shelf systems as part of STRATAFORM; (2) interpret coredating results in the context of sedimentological and sonar/seismic datasets available for the U.S. West Coast STRATAFORM study area; and (3) disseminate research findings through journal articles and the STRATAFORM master volume.

tween Eurasia and Africa that result in a primary eastward-directed, low-velocity current flow along the mid-Cretaceous Eurasian, northern Tethys margin. This conclusion appears to be at odds with sedimentologic and paleontologic field evidence (2, 3) obtained from the Helvetic tectonic unit that is exposed in the northern Alps and represents the former northern Tethys margin in southern Europe...
متن کاملRoles of sorption and tube-dwelling benthos in the cycling of phosphorus in Bering Sea sediments
Adsorption of dissolved phosphate onto iron-hydroxides has been shown to be one of the primary regulators of phosphorus cycling in sediments. Bioturbation and bioirrigation by benthic infauna modify this cycling by accelerating the transport of dissolved and particulate phosphorus and by changing rates of reactions that occur in the sediment, such as the adsorption of phosphate by amorphous iro...
متن کاملCyclone pumping, sediment partitioning and the development of the Great Barrier Reef shelf system: a review
The modern Great Barrier Reef (GBR) is part of the world’s largest and best known mixed terrigenous-carbonate continental margin. The GBR shelf contains three shore-parallel sedimentary belts: an inner shelf zone of terrigenous sedimentation at depths of 0–22m; a middle shelf zone of sediment starvation at depths of 22–40m; and an outer shelf reef tract with its inner edge at ca. 40m depth. The...
متن کاملReconnaissance Survey of the Irish Continental Shelf/Shelf Edge Atlantic Irish Regional Survey (AIRS) 1996 A GLORIA Survey of the Irish Continental Margin
The Atlantic Irish Regional Survey (AIRS96) sidescan sonar survey was carried out in August 1996. Covering an area of 200,000 km 2 it represented the largest reconnaissance seabed survey of the Irish Continental Shelf region. It covered both margins, together with much of the basin floor, of the Irish sector of the Rockall Trough and extended into the northern part of the Porcupine Seabight. Th...
متن کاملAlgal Turf Sediments and Sediment Production by Parrotfishes across the Continental Shelf of the Northern Great Barrier Reef
Sediments are found in the epilithic algal matrix (EAM) of all coral reefs and play important roles in ecological processes. Although we have some understanding of patterns of EAM sediments across individual reefs, our knowledge of patterns across broader spatial scales is limited. We used an underwater vacuum sampler to quantify patterns in two of the most ecologically relevant factors of EAM ...
